Prevent WordPress plugins from auto updating

April 30, 2013

We recently added a simple ecommerce option to a WordPress site (www.parkfarm.co.uk) using the great ‘Simple Cart and Buy Now’ plugin.

However I did have to make some tweaks to it – namely to allow the client to add their basic shipping cost and to make the Add to Cart button *just* add to cart and not take the customer to the product page.

It all worked wonderfully – until the client decided to update all the plugins. [Read more…]

Quick wins for boosting your online presence for SEO

March 10, 2013

I’m often asked by clients how to improve their search engine rankings and here are a collection of things that while I can’t guarantee they’ll miraculously improve your search ranking overnight – they are free and they can’t hurt.

1) Add more content! Also ensure that articles you write are laid out with keyword rich titles and subtitles & all images have descriptive “alt” tags. And check things like  the page titles & descriptions by looking in the Page Source for your browser.

Yes the search rankings will improve as you add more content – but you also definitely need to be sharing it on places like Facebook and other sites.
The more links out there that Google can find to your site the better. [Read more…]

Adding a simple Spam trap to Zencart 1.5

January 31, 2013

One client wanted simple spam prevention device on the customer registration form of his Zencart store and while I looked at the plugins available on the Zencart website, as I had done some hefty customisation to the client’s Zencart theme already, I was worried that some of the plugins would overwrite all my hard work.

So I did it from scratch and here’s how: [Read more…]

Using GitHub for Windows to clone remote git

November 16, 2012

I’m not an expert in git. I know its the way forward for versioning etc but everytime I come to use it, it has me scratching my head.
So here are my tips for getting a remote git project cloned locally so you can look at the files:

1) Download GitHub for Windows (sorry I confess – I’m a Windows users. So sue me!)
2) Once installed you don’t need to login with your GitHub account unless you are getting a git from there
3) Create a local repository
4) Open it up & under Tools choose “Open shell here”. A Windows PowerShell command window will appear
5) Once it has loaded and you can see a blinking cursor type in “git clone YOUR_PATH_TO_CLONE.git” (Note: to paste you can right-click and choose ‘Paste’ from the menu)
6) You should then be prompted for you password (which you can’t paste, you have to type)

If all’s well you should see it start to download the files (in my case veeerrryyyy slowly!)

I’ll update this post with any other useful tips as I find them!
